Our Orienteering Course (S-204) is offered at Fox Kits Wilderness Survival School in Selmer, TN. This course differs from our land navigation courses in that it does not include use of grid systems. It is, however, full of many important and fun skills to help you find your way in the wilderness. Orienteering is actually a sport in which athletes combine the intellectual skills of using a map and compass with the physical skills of cross-country foot racing. Not only do orienteerers have to find their way, they are also in a race to finish first! Students learn to orienteer using a topographic map and a compass from a known point but unlike true orienteering our students can choose to walk if they wish. The course includes the following classes:

Intro to Metric System
True, Magnetic, and Grid North
Compass Types, Parts & Use
Reading Topographical Maps
Orienting the Map
Terrain Features
Plotting Courses
Adjusting for Magnetic Variation (Declination)
Selecting Routes and By-passing Obstacles
Pacing Distance
Triangulation (Resection)
Improvised Navigation Techniques
and Practical Exercises for each hands-on skill

While Fox Kits will make every effort to contact you one month prior to the course start date to confirm your attendance we will automatically charge your card for the balance of the tuition fee two weeks prior to the first day of class. If rescheduling becomes necessary we will be happy to work with you; all payments will be applied to future training. It is your responsibility to confirm or reschedule! Requests for rescheduling must be received no later than two weeks prior to course start date at which time services are considered to have been rendered and your seat is confirmed (we can't fill vacated seats on that short a notice.) In such cases your seat is transferrable if you can find someone to attend in your place so long as they qualify for attendance.
